JFREJ Mimouna

Sivan artistic coordinated JFREJ’s first ever Mimouna with an extraordinary team including Keren Soffer-Sharon, Tom Haviv, Hannah Goldman, Maya Edery, Ora Batashvili, Anna Jacobs and Jenny Romaine, in partnership with the Arab-American Association of New York.

Mimouna is a holiday that comes from Moroccan and other North African Jewish communities. It begins the night Passover ends, and marks the return of chametz back into Jewish homes. Jews who lived in Muslim countries would often open their homes to everyone on the block, including their Muslim neighbors, and everyone would eat flour-y pancakes, sing Arabic songs, dance, and celebrate together.

With a turnout of over 350 people to Widdi Catering Hall in Bay Ridge, Mimouna was a watershed event for our Mizrahi community in NYC, integrating cultural work, celebration, and abundant joy into our political vision of collective, intersectional liberation.
